iPhone Speaker Not Working? Causes and Fixes

If your iPhone speaker is not working, first check which sound is missing: calls at your ear, speakerphone, music or incoming alerts. Then test the relevant volume and audio destination before assuming a speaker needs replacement. If the problem continues, iPhone repair in Caroline Springs can help you work out whether the issue involves settings, a blocked opening or a repairable fault.

A quiet call and a silent video can have different causes. The checks below help you describe the problem clearly and decide when to stop troubleshooting.

Which iPhone sound is missing?

Start in a quiet room at a comfortable listening volume. Use a familiar audio clip that you know contains sound, then compare it with a normal phone call and speakerphone. Keep the phone away from your ear when testing loudspeaker audio.

What happensWhat to check first
Videos and music work, but incoming calls do not ringRinger volume, Silent mode and Focus settings.
Calls are quiet at your ear, but speakerphone worksCall volume during the call, the selected audio route and the receiver opening.
Music plays through headphones or the car insteadThe playback destination and connected audio accessories.
One app is silent, but other apps play normallyThat app’s mute control, content and available updates.
You hear the caller, but they cannot hear youThe microphone or call connection, rather than assuming the speaker is faulty.
Sound crackles across different apps and callsObstructions, recent liquid or impact damage, and whether assessment is needed.

These comparisons narrow the next check; they do not identify a failed part with certainty. If the other person cannot hear your voice, our iPhone microphone troubleshooting guide covers that separate symptom.

Safe checks for an iPhone speaker that is not working

1. Adjust the volume while the affected sound is playing

For a quiet phone call, press Volume Up during the call. For music or a video, adjust the volume while it plays. Pressing a volume button at another time may adjust a different sound level, so a high ringer setting does not establish that call or media volume is high.

If only ringtones or alerts are missing, check Settings > Sounds & Haptics. Turn off Silent mode using the controls available on your model and review any active Focus. Silent mode does not silence every kind of audio: music and alarms can still play.

2. Make sure audio is going to the iPhone

Disconnect wired headphones and audio adapters. Open the playback destination control in Control Centre and choose the iPhone rather than headphones, a Bluetooth speaker, a car or an AirPlay device. A phone can be working normally while sending its audio somewhere unexpected.

During a call, use the Audio control to select the intended destination. If calls repeatedly start on an unwanted device, review Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Call Audio Routing. Test again after disconnecting the accessory.

3. Remove anything covering the sound openings

Take off a case or screen protector that obstructs the receiver or another sound opening. Switch off the phone and unplug its cables before gentle cleaning. For visible surface debris, use a small, clean, dry brush with soft bristles; do not push it into the mesh.

Do not use pins, liquid, compressed air or tools to dig inside an opening. Compacted debris or damaged mesh is a reason to arrange a check rather than apply more pressure.

4. Compare an alert, media and a call

Use the Ringtone and Alerts slider in Sounds & Haptics to check alert playback. Also try the known audio clip and a call with speakerphone. If the slider produces no sound or its speaker control is dimmed, service may be needed.

If media sounds normal but calls break up, try another caller or location before blaming the speaker. Reception can affect call quality. A problem confined to one call app also deserves an app-specific check.

5. Restart and check for updates

If the phone is dry and otherwise operating normally, perform a normal restart using the method for your model. Re-test before changing more settings. Check for relevant app and iOS updates, and back up important data before installing a system update.

A fault appearing after an update does not establish that the update damaged a speaker. Note when it began, which apps are affected and whether a restart changes it.

6. Review balance if stereo sound seems uneven

Under Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual, check whether the left/right balance has been moved away from the centre. Mono Audio changes how stereo channels are combined; it does not repair damaged hardware. Leave accessibility settings that you rely on in place unless you understand the effect of changing them.

Why can I hear iPhone calls only on speakerphone?

When a call is difficult to hear at your ear but clear on speakerphone, check the active call volume and receiver opening first. Repeat with a second call and confirm that audio is not routed to an accessory. The pattern is useful information for a repairer, but it does not prove that replacing the receiver alone will fix it.

After a drop, screen repair or liquid exposure, mention that history when arranging an assessment. If the issue started immediately after a repair, contact that repairer and explain which audio tests work and which fail. Avoid opening the phone yourself or buying a speaker based only on the symptom.

Is one side of the bottom speaker not working?

Do not assume matching rows of holes are two matching speakers. Speaker and microphone layouts vary by iPhone model. Many models use a receiver/top speaker and a separate bottom speaker, while other designs differ; an opening that makes no sound may be a microphone opening.

Judge the overall change in sound and check the layout for your exact model. Covering holes with a finger or comparing their appearance is not a reliable way to identify a faulty speaker.

What if the speaker sounds muffled after getting wet?

Water around a speaker opening can affect sound temporarily, but muffled audio cannot tell you whether liquid has reached the inside. Disconnect charging cables and allow the phone to dry in a place with airflow. For water around the speaker, a lint-free cloth with the speaker side facing down can help moisture drain.

Avoid heat, rice, compressed air and objects inside the connector. Do not reconnect a cable while a liquid alert remains or the connector is wet. A clearing alert does not confirm that the whole phone is dry or free of damage.

Do not rely on a “water-eject” sound as proof of a repair. Persistent distortion, unreliable operation or other symptoms after exposure need assessment. Read about water-damage assessment before continuing to use a phone with suspected internal liquid damage.

Should you reset an iPhone to fix the speaker?

A factory reset is a disruptive step for an uncertain sound fault. It should not be the starting point when audio routing, volume and obstructions have not been checked.

Reset All Settings is different from erasing the phone: it retains personal content but changes many preferences and connections. Erase All Content and Settings, or a computer factory restore, deletes content. Back up accessible data and seek advice before taking a step that could remove your files. Our iPhone software repair guide explains the broader software-repair context.

When should you arrange an assessment?

  • Sound stays absent or distorted across multiple tests after the basic checks.
  • The problem began after impact, liquid exposure or another repair.
  • The receiver or speaker mesh appears damaged, or debris cannot be removed gently.
  • Call audio controls behave unexpectedly, or sound problems occur with other faults.

Tell the repairer your exact iPhone model, when the issue started, and whether calls, speakerphone, media and headphones behave differently. Bring a relevant accessory if the problem occurs only when it is connected.

Katya Phone offers free checks and assessments in Caroline Springs. You can ask about a sound fault before visiting; walk-ins are also welcome.

How much does iPhone speaker repair cost?

The quote depends on the model and the fault found. An obstructed opening, damaged speaker assembly, connection problem and deeper fault can involve different work. Ask for a model-specific quote after assessment rather than assuming a screen or microphone repair price applies.

Katya Phone checks the device, repairs it where practical and explains the options honestly if the work is not worthwhile. No Fix No Fee means no fee is charged when the device cannot be repaired. Repairs include a six-month warranty, excluding water damage and subsequent physical damage such as new cracks or accidental breakage. Timing depends on the work required and parts availability.

iPhone Speaker Not Working – Frequently Asked Questions

Check call volume while a call is active and confirm the selected Audio destination. Compare a normal call with speakerphone and another caller or location. A blocked receiver, routing issue, reception problem or hardware fault can produce different call-audio symptoms, so one failed call does not identify the cause.

First check the receiver opening and raise the volume during a normal call. If the problem continues across calls while speakerphone is clear, arrange an assessment and describe that pattern. It is a useful clue, not proof that a particular replacement part will solve it.

Ringer and media volume are separate controls. Check Silent mode, the Ringtone and Alerts level, and any active Focus. A phone that plays media normally may have an alert-setting issue rather than a failed speaker.

Not every opening along the bottom is a speaker, and layouts differ by model. Check your exact model’s layout before assuming a second speaker has failed. Assess a change in overall audio rather than expecting sound from every grille.

Yes. Audio may be routed to connected headphones, a car or another playback device. Choose the iPhone as the playback destination and test after disconnecting the accessory.

Switch off the phone, unplug cables and remove any obstructing case. Use only gentle surface cleaning with a small, clean, dry, soft-bristled brush. Avoid liquid, compressed air and sharp objects; seek help for debris that will not come away gently.

It cannot establish that liquid damage has been repaired or that the phone is dry inside. Allow safe drying, avoid heat and rice, and do not cable-charge a wet connector. Persistent distortion or other faults after liquid exposure need assessment.

Start with the less disruptive checks before considering a reset. Reset All Settings changes preferences without deleting personal content, while erasing or factory-restoring the phone deletes content. Back up accessible data and get advice before an erasing step.

That is a different symptom from missing sound at your end and can involve the microphone, the app or the call connection. Note whether it affects normal calls, speakerphone and recordings. Explain those differences when seeking help instead of requesting a speaker replacement by default.

Yes. Katya Phone offers free checks and assessments in Caroline Springs, with repair options depending on the model and fault. No Fix No Fee applies when a device cannot be repaired, and repairs include a six-month warranty excluding water damage and subsequent physical damage.

Get the sound fault checked before replacing parts

Separate call, media and alert problems, check where audio is playing, and stop if cleaning or liquid damage needs more than a safe surface check. You do not need to identify the faulty part before asking for help.
