If your MacBook trackpad is not working, first check whether the pointer, clicking or only a gesture has stopped responding. If there is no liquid exposure, unusual heat or physical distortion, try a clean, dry surface, a normal restart and the relevant trackpad settings. A connected mouse can help you navigate and back up your files. If the fault persists, our MacBook repair service in Caroline Springs can assess the cause before you commit to a repair.
Stop testing if the trackpad is lifting or liquid has entered
A raised trackpad, separating case, unusual heat or a change in the laptop’s shape needs assessment. Do not push the trackpad back down, force the lid closed or try to flatten the case. Physical distortion can have several causes, including a battery problem; the symptom alone does not confirm which part has failed.
If the issue followed a spill, shut down the Mac if you can do so safely, disconnect external power and arrange an assessment. Avoid repeated power-on attempts, heat, sprays and anything pushed under the trackpad edge. Do not keep a damaged laptop running just to finish the checks below.
What exactly has stopped working
Describe the symptom before changing settings. These checks concern the built-in MacBook trackpad; a separate Magic Trackpad also has its own charging and connection checks.
- The pointer will not move: try one finger on the surface and check whether the Mac itself is responding. Two fingers are normally used for scrolling rather than moving the pointer.
- The pointer moves but a press does nothing: test a normal click separately from a deeper Force Click. Notice whether a light tap works when Tap to click is enabled.
- Only scrolling, dragging or a gesture fails: check that particular setting and try another app before treating it as total trackpad failure.
- The keyboard and trackpad both stop: test an external mouse if available and note whether the whole Mac is frozen. This does not automatically prove that a particular cable needs replacement.
Write down when it started, whether it happens in every app, and any recent spill, drop, repair, accessory change or software installation. Those details make an assessment more useful than simply saying the trackpad is broken.
Safe checks for a MacBook trackpad not working
1 Clean the surface and check power
Shut down and unplug the laptop before cleaning. Gently wipe the exterior with a soft, lint-free cloth, keeping moisture out of openings and never spraying cleaner directly onto it. Let the surface and your fingers dry before testing.
Provided there are no damage or battery warning signs, connect the correct power adaptor if the battery may be flat. Apple notes that an unseen low-battery alert can explain an unresponsive trackpad. A Force Touch trackpad also needs power to produce its click feedback, so a lack of clicking while the Mac is off is not by itself evidence of damage.
2 Disconnect unnecessary accessories
Safely eject storage devices, then disconnect docks and other unnecessary accessories. Test again with the Mac on a stable surface. Keep a known-working mouse connected if you need it to navigate, and note whether the built-in trackpad changes when that mouse is disconnected.
In System Settings, open Accessibility, then Pointer Control. Check Ignore built-in trackpad when mouse or wireless trackpad is present. When enabled, this deliberately disables the built-in trackpad while an external pointing device is in use. Turn it off if you want both devices available. Mouse Keys can also have a separate option to ignore the built-in trackpad; review that only if Mouse Keys is enabled.
3 Check clicks and gestures separately
Open System Settings, then Trackpad. Older macOS versions use the name System Preferences. Under Point & Click, review tracking speed, click pressure and Tap to click where your model supports them. Check Scroll & Zoom or More Gestures if only a particular gesture fails.
On Force Touch models, the deeper Force Click is different from the first ordinary click. Disabling Force Click is not a universal repair for a trackpad that cannot move the pointer. Tap to click may be a temporary way to select items if movement still works, but it does not establish that the hardware is healthy.
4 Restart normally and protect your files
Save your work, then choose Restart from the Apple menu. If the entire Mac has frozen and a normal shutdown is impossible, holding the power button until it turns off is a last resort; unsaved changes can be lost. Do not repeat forced shutdowns as a repair routine.
If a mouse lets you use the Mac safely, make a current backup before further troubleshooting or service. Time Machine can back up to a suitable external drive. Check that the backup completed; connecting a drive alone does not establish that your files were copied.
Install available compatible updates through Software Update after backing up. Note whether the fault began after an update, but do not assume timing proves the update caused physical damage. If you cannot navigate or back up safely, stop here and explain that when arranging help.
Use Safe Mode to check for startup software
Safe Mode can help identify problems associated with software that loads at startup. First check Apple menu, About This Mac: a Chip entry identifies Apple silicon, while a Processor entry naming Intel identifies an Intel Mac.
- Apple silicon: shut down completely. Hold the power button until startup options appear, select the startup volume, hold Shift and choose Continue in Safe Mode.
- Intel: turn on or restart and immediately hold Shift until the login window appears. You may need to log in twice.
Compare the same pointer and click actions, then restart normally to leave Safe Mode. A difference is useful evidence for further investigation, rather than proof that one app is responsible. If both built-in input devices are unusable, do not struggle through startup steps without a working way to control the Mac.
Apple Diagnostics can provide another clue
For an undamaged Mac that can be tested safely, Apple Diagnostics may help identify a hardware issue. Disconnect unnecessary external devices, keep the required keyboard, mouse, display and power connection, and use a hard, ventilated surface.
- Apple silicon: from shutdown, hold the power button until Options appears, release it, then hold Command-D until the Mac restarts.
- Intel: turn on and immediately hold D. If that does not work, try Option-D at startup.
Follow the onscreen instructions and record any reference codes. In macOS Tahoe 26 and later, you may be asked to select a specific test, including the trackpad. A result without a reported fault should not overrule a repeatable problem you can demonstrate; bring a clear description of the symptom too.
When assessment makes more sense than another reset
Arrange an assessment when the problem continues after the basic checks, follows physical or liquid damage, affects only part of the surface, or involves both the keyboard and trackpad. Intermittent faults are worth documenting, especially if they disappear before the laptop reaches the workshop.
Possible causes include the trackpad, its connection, a battery-related issue or a deeper fault. The repair depends on the model and inspection findings. A symptom shared with an older MacBook does not establish that your newer model needs the same part.
You do not need to begin by deleting preference files, erasing macOS or following an arbitrary SMC reset sequence. Those steps are not interchangeable across MacBook generations. Start with the checks that preserve your settings and files, then choose further work based on evidence.
If you are unsure where to stop, contact Katya Phone with your MacBook model, the exact symptom and any damage history. We can discuss the next assessment step from our Caroline Springs workshop.
Repair quotes and data access at Katya Phone
A useful quote needs the MacBook model, the affected functions and an assessment of any additional damage. Ask which component or assembly is proposed, what part option is available and what the quoted work includes. No single trackpad price or turnaround applies to every MacBook.
Walk-ins are welcome, or call ahead to confirm your model, repair options and parts availability. Katya Phone checks the fault and repairs it where practical. If a deeper issue is not repairable or the work is not worthwhile, we explain that honestly. Under No Fix No Fee, there is no fee when the device cannot be repaired.
Repairs include a six-month, 180-day warranty, excluding water damage and subsequent physical damage, including new cracks and accidental breakage. Ask how the warranty applies to the proposed work.
Back up accessible files before service whenever possible. Data transfer or eligible recovery depends on the device powering on and its data being accessible; a failed trackpad does not establish that files are lost, and a repair cannot be promised to recover them.

MacBook Trackpad Problems – Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my MacBook trackpad not working but the keyboard is?
Check whether the pointer, click or only a gesture has failed, then review the relevant settings and restart normally. A working keyboard does not rule out a trackpad hardware problem. If the fault persists or followed damage, arrange an assessment rather than guessing which part needs replacement.
Why does the pointer move but the trackpad will not click?
Movement and clicking are separate functions. Check click pressure and Tap to click in Trackpad settings where available, and test an ordinary click separately from Force Click. If pressing still fails while movement works, a mouse or Tap to click may help temporarily while you arrange assessment.
Should a Force Touch trackpad click when the MacBook is off?
A Force Touch trackpad does not produce click or haptic feedback when it is turned off. Test it with the Mac powered on, provided there are no damage or battery warning signs. Older trackpads with a mechanical click behave differently.
Can connecting a mouse disable the built-in trackpad?
Yes, macOS has an accessibility setting that ignores the built-in trackpad when a mouse or wireless trackpad is present. Check System Settings, Accessibility, then Pointer Control. Turn that setting off if you want to use both devices.
What if my MacBook keyboard and trackpad both stop working?
Check whether the whole Mac has frozen and whether a known-working external mouse responds. Note any recent damage, repairs or software changes. Both symptoms together need diagnosis; they do not automatically identify a failed cable or logic board.
Should I keep using a MacBook with a raised trackpad?
Stop using and charging it and arrange an assessment. Do not press the trackpad back down or try to flatten the case. A raised surface can indicate an internal problem, including a battery issue, but inspection is needed to establish the cause.
What should I do if the trackpad stopped after a spill?
Shut down if safe, disconnect external power and seek an assessment. Avoid heat, sprays and repeated attempts to turn the laptop on. Liquid-related faults need inspection before anyone can promise a repair outcome.
Will Safe Mode or Apple Diagnostics fix the trackpad?
They are troubleshooting tools rather than guaranteed repairs. Safe Mode helps investigate startup software, while Apple Diagnostics can report hardware clues. Record the result and any reference codes, and explain whether the fault can still be repeated.
How much does a MacBook trackpad repair cost?
The quote depends on the model, the diagnosed fault, the required part or assembly and any additional damage. Katya Phone can discuss the repair options after assessment. Call ahead to confirm your model and parts availability rather than relying on a universal price.
Will trackpad repair erase my files?
A trackpad symptom alone does not mean your files are lost, but you should make a current backup before service if the Mac can be used safely. Tell the repairer if you cannot access or back up the data. Eligible data recovery depends on the device powering on and its data being accessible.
Choose the next step from the symptom
A MacBook trackpad problem may involve settings, software or hardware. Start with safe checks, keep pointer movement and clicking separate, and protect your files before further work. Stop if there is liquid exposure or physical distortion.
